Lowering Energy Costs and Emissions For Residential Buildings
The performance of EndoTherm was piloted by The Minto Group in 3 locations over the 2020/21 heating season. The Minto Group is a fully integrated real estate company offering new homes and condos, apartment rentals, furnished suites, and commercial space.
Three multi-unit residential buildings were chosen for the analysis. These included:
METHODOLOGY
The standard methodology for an EndoTherm pilot project takes guidance from the International Protocol for the Measurement & Verification of Performance (IPMVP) Option C which uses total natural gas consumption.
A proportion of the total consumption of each building will be the domestic hot water (DHW) load. This will be calculated and removed from the final efficiency savings.
Natural gas consumption is normalized for variances in outside temperature using Heating Degree Days (HDD) from a nearby weather station in Ottawa or Toronto.
A regression line is calculated from the historical consumption normalized against Heating Degree Days for the same period. The calculated trendline (in the form y=mx+c) from this baseline can be used to predict consumption for any know HDD value during the pilot period. The y-intercept of this trendline will be identified as the baseload for each site.
This predicted value can be compared with the actual recorded value from billing data to determine a change in demand caused by the ECM. A CuSum analysis of each month’s change can be used to determine the total efficiency improvement over the 6 month pilot period.
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS
It is noted that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on occupancy and thus demand of many buildings. Thus the 4th site (750 York Mills) will be used as a comparison to 740 York Mills. These systems are side by side and have identical boiler systems.
The pilots were run for 6 months between October 2020 and April 2021.
Over the 6-month period. The 3 EndoTherm sites showed savings on all sites ranging from 8.47% to 15.31%. The average saving was 11.11%.
750 York Mills showed a small saving of 2.67%. This was 9.54% lower than 740 York Mills which showed an HVAC saving of 12.20%.
A saving of 77,277 m3 of natural gas is a reduction of 147,000kg of CO2e.
